The Board of Directors of Third District Supervisor Jeff Stone’s Race for Humanity is accepting requests for funding from local charitable nonprofits. Funds will be awarded in June 2010. To be considered, each organization’s or foundation’s purpose must support the Race for Humanity’s mission to raise awareness of the issues pertaining to women and children in Riverside County, such as family safety, domestic violence, substance abuse, sexual assault, homelessness, breast health care, heart disease, education, autism and others. Eligible nonprofits must also serve the communities within Riverside County’s Third District and hold 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt statuses with the IRS.
Since 2007, a public/private partnership between Riverside County Board of Supervisors, Race for Humanity Board of Directors, businesses and citizens throughout Riverside County has helped raise approximately $464,000 awarded to 20 local nonprofits. Average grant amounts given to nonprofits in 2007 and 2008 were $24,900, with an estimated $150,192 to be awarded among seven recipient organizations in 2009.
Lori Stone, organizer of Race for Humanity’s 5K/10K race and expo, added a new outreach program to the April 2009 event. The inaugural Food Drive 4 Humanity took in food items from participants and volunteers, which were donated to five food pantries serving
Riverside County communities.
“Families, seniors, veterans and those who have very few resources need our help more than ever before” commented Ms. Stone. “People are dealing with so many issues right now and hunger should not be one of them”.
Another first was the Heart 4 Humanity Award presented to two extraordinary
women who have excelled in their areas of expertise helping women and children. Both honorees were recognized for their far-reaching volunteer work beyond their calls of duty. Recipients of the inaugural Heart for Humanity Awards were Melissa Donaldson, executive director of Safe Alternatives for Everyone, and Linda Dunn, Riverside County Chief District Attorney.
