scott-kubinskiI am often asked, “What is the most important thing I can do to protect my computer network?”  Unfortunately, there is no easy answer.  If you ask ten computer experts the same question, you likely will get ten different responses.  There is no silver bullet to protect your network.  Network security is not about doing one thing; rather it is about creating multiple security layers.  With each additional layer of security, you make it more difficult to penetrate your “shield.”  With that in mind, I offer my opinion of the five most important things to do, in no particular order:

  1. Daily Backups – If the worst happens, you must be able to recover.  Perform DAILY backups of your data to both a local storage device and an off-site location.
  2. Router/Firewall – Install a router/firewall on your network and CHANGE THE PASSWORD TO A COMPLEX PASSWORD.  If using wireless, disable the SSID broadcast and enable WPA or WEP encryption.
  3. Anti-Virus – Have quality anti-virus software on EVERY server and client PC in your network; have dedicated Exchange Server Anti-Virus (if applicable).  Set the AV software to update definitions hourly.
  4. Operating System Updates – It is CRITICAL that you install the latest Operating System updates.  Set updates to automatic or have I.T. make sure updates are applied regularly.
  5. Common Sense at the Front Door – Even with the best Anti-Virus software, if you invite the bad guy through the front door, you are not going to be protected.  Immediately close any unexpected pop-up window.  Never open an unexpected E-Mail attachment, even if it is from a friend or family member.

Remember, this is not a complete list.  Alas, nothing you do will provide 100% protection.  However, as I said, by doing several little things and using common sense you can be reasonably confident that your network will remain secure.  I will offer details on each of the five “most important things you can do” in upcoming articles.
